Bridges, Signs and Delineation
As well as continuing to deliver programmes of inspection, maintenance and renewal the regional Bridge Management and Signs and Delineation teams also provide expert assistance on all other projects as and where required.
Overall progress on projects across all sections is good. Compliance on project development and appraisal is an ongoing priority. Ensuring conformance with the Public Spending Code and value for money principles is essential on all projects of any scale. The NRO ensures, in close cooperation with TII, that the appraisal and expenditure practices employed are to a compliant standard, and that these standards are maintained and updated.
Projects at Final Design/Tender
Following on from other recent successful projects a number of further significant improvements to the N56 are planned. These are being prepared for possible construction in the immediate short term. These include the N56 Dungloe to Cloughbolie and the N56 Letterilly to Glenties / Kilraine.
Projects at Inception, Early Design / Initial Planning
The NRO continue to review and assess the existing road network in Donegal. The office is developing a long term strategy for the identification, scheduling and development of priority route improvements through the lengthy planning, appraisal and design process. In 2019 the NRO has commenced Design on two schemes, the N13 Bridgend to the Border with the Department of Infrastructure Northern Ireland and the N56 Doonwell to Drumbrick.
In addition, a long list of projects are at concept / initial appraisal stage. They have been identified as the future (medium term) improvement needs on the national road network in the county. Examples include ; N13 Stranorlar to Letterkenny, N3 from Ballyshannon to the Northern Ireland border, N56 Inver to Killybegs (Five points), N56 Falcarragh to Gortahork.
