Manage, maintain and develop physical, social, economic, environmental, community and cultural infrastructure
The Water & Environment Service is responsible for:
· Operation of public water services on behalf of Irish Water (IW).
· Oversight of the Rural Water Sector as the Supervising Authority.
· Waste management.
· Water pollution control and response management.
· Working with stakeholders to achieve the objectives of River Basin Management Plan.
· Environmental education and awareness.
· Litter management.
· Managing beaches and commissioning coastal studies.
· Infrastructure support for leisure facilities.
Water Services
Drinking Water Supplies
The Service Level Agreement between Irish Water and the Council continues to provide for the management of water and waste water services in County Donegal. This included the operation of 32 Public Water Supplies (PWS) which in 2019 producing 26.8 million cubic meters of drinking water serving a population of approximately 160,000. A further 89,100 cubic meters of water was purchased from Northern Ireland Water. Water from public water supply sources is also provided to consumers through 6 public Group Water Supply schemes (GWS).
In 2019 the Council initiated a Lead Replacement Programme and a Pressure Management Programme on behalf of Irish Water.
