Bridge Maintenance
In 2019, Donegal County Council was awarded Specific Improvement Grant for Bridge Rehabilitation on Regional Roads of €250,000 with works undertaken to 9 bridges. These works were successfully completed in 2019.
A further €250,000 was allocated for the specialist strengthening or replacement
of another 11 bridges throughout the county. These works too were successfully completed in 2019.
In addition, €135,000 was allocated
under flood repairs and other sources for
the strengthening of 6 weak or damaged bridges. Again these works were successfully completed in 2019.
Road Design
A number of road design projects were progressed during 2019 following receipt of funding from DTTAS for:
· Fintra Bridge and Road Realignment - the Route Selection Process was completed.
· Letterkenny Southern Relief Road and Bridges - ongoing consultation with DPER and DTTAS facilitated the close out of
the Preliminary Appraisal and approval
to proceed to preparation of consultant brief for the project.
· Letterkenny Traffic Management System - design options were developed and
a consultant appointed to undertake junction modelling and route option assessments to determine the preferred solution.
The Joe Bonner Road project progressed to site construction works in 2019. The design of the DUGS footpath works at Port Road, Lower Main Street and Oliver Plunkett Road were completed.
The Road Design team also continued to develop carparks and one way systems for various locations in consultation with the MD Area Teams while progressing a new land purchase protocol to improve efficiency and time scale of land conveyencing processes.
Road Safety
The Road Design Safety team completed the assessment and design of many low-cost accident schemes to improve road safety and HD15 schemes on the National Roads were further developed.
DTTAS approved funding for all low cost accident schemes applied for with works completed by year end.
