 Veterinary Service
Accessible, efficient and good value services and supports
Donegal County Council’s Veterinary Service provides a statutory advisory and administrative role on matters relating
to veterinary public health, responsible animal ownership and responsible animal management.
Veterinary Public Health
Under service contract to the Food Safety Authority of Ireland, Donegal County Council provides the regulatory control service in low throughput abattoirs, on-farm poultry slaughtering plants and meat processing establishments in the county. Fifteen premises were under supervision in 2019. Veterinary Inspectors inspected 15,095 animals in 5 local abattoirs.
A further 228 official control inspections were completed over all the premises with 182 control samples taken.
Animal Control
In 2019 eight general dog licences, 78 lifetime dog licences and 8719 individual dog licences were issued. Seven inspections were carried out under the Dog Breeding Establishment Act. 308 dogs were either reunited with their owners or re-homed through the Donegal County Council Dog Shelter. 12 stray horses were reported to the Council in 2019 with 4 impounded.
