16/09/20 - Funding applications invited under Community Enhancement Programme – 2020 fund for Community Centres and Community Buildings

Donegal County Council and the Donegal Local Community Development Committee (LCDC) are inviting applications for a programme which provides funding to communities in Ireland.

The Minister for Rural and Community Development, Mr. Joe O’Brien TD, announced details of €5 million funding for community centres and facilities under the July stimulus package.

The funding will be provided under the Community Enhancement Programme, and is in addition to €2 million provided under that programme earlier this year.

The Community Enhancement Programme for Community Centres and Community Buildings is funded by the Department of Rural and Community Development and will provide grant funding in 2020 towards enhancing the facilities available to communities.

The fund for this Programme in Donegal in 2020 will be €234,073, and will be managed by the Donegal Local Community Development Committee (LCDC).  Two grants are available – small scale capital grant of between €500-€1,000 and large capital grant of up to €5,000.

Minister Ring said:  ““This €5 million funding will provide capital grants to help improve community centres, and other community buildings and facilities. These important facilities operate at the heart of each community. They provide activities and services that help strengthen the bonds that tie communities together and they provide valuable services to the people in their area."

The new fund seeks to stimulate local economies by providing capital grants towards the maintenance, improvement and upkeep of community centres, and community buildings. Similar expenditure on other community facilities will also be allowed.

Cllr Niamh Kennedy, Chairperson of Donegal LCDC, encouraged all Community Groups to apply and stated that "It is clear, based on the volume of applications received for the previous Community Enhancement Programme, that many groups are making huge efforts to continue to serve their communities despite the challenges of the COVID pandemic and this funding will assist these community groups by enabling them to develop their facilities during this difficult time.”

Closing date

Completed applications must be lodged not later than 3pm on Thursday, 1st October 2020. Further details and application form available here.
