10th September 2014

Press Release

40 tonnes of waste electrical goods collected filling nine articulated lorries

Throughout August this year Donegal County Council in conjunction with WEEE Ireland organised eight free "one- off" electrical goods recycling days across the county. These days took place over the course of three weekends in Falcarragh, Carrigart, Bunbeg, Buncrana, Lifford, Kilybegs, Bundoran and Glencolmcille. Over 40 tonnes of all types of large and small waste electrical and electronic goods were collected for recycling, filling a total of nine articulated lorries.

The following options are available to householders to recycle their waste electrical and electronic equipment for free.

1.Householders can  to bring back their old electrical or electronic items to retailers for free.

2. If you are having an electrical or electronic item delivered to your house and the retailer has given a householder 24 hours' notice of delivery, the retailer must collect the old item on delivery of the new one, completely free of charge given that your old item is ready for collection.

If the item is not available for immediate collection and the householder has been given 24 hours' notice of delivery the householder can return the item to the store or to a recycling centre. If however, the retailer has not given 24hours' notice of delivery the householder can ask the retailer to return and take the old item back within 15 days.

 3. If you are purchasing goods online or from catalogues should be aware that the retailer must ensure that electrical goods can be returned free of charge on a one-for-one basis. They must also place a visible notice on their website, catalogue or advertisements indicating free take-back.

 4. Larger electrical stores with sales that are greater than 400 sq metres must take back small electrical and electronic items (less than 25cm) free of charge without any obligation to purchase a new one.

 5. You can also bring back your waste electrical goods free of charge all year round to any one of the six recycling centres in Donegal. The recycling centres are located in Letterkenny, Laghey, Milford, Carndonagh, Dungloe and Stranorlar.

All sizes and all types of old unwanted electrical goods or electronic goods are accepted for recycling free of charge, basically anything with a plug or a battery. Check out opening hours at .
