24/09/21 - Trail Gazers supports National Walking Day

National Walking Day in Ireland takes place annually in September as part of European Week of Sport, and is organised by Get Ireland Walking. National Walking Day aims to celebrate the efforts of community walking volunteers and to promote the activity of walking at a local level in communities across Ireland.

During the past 18 months, the number of adults participating in recreational walking reached unprecedented levels and Trail Gazers want that to continue. Walking is a hugely accessible activity and has many benefits for both the body and the mind, which is one of the key promotional messages of the Trail Gazers Project.

What is Trail Gazers?

Trail Gazers, is a European project being piloted at Inch Levels Wildfowl Reserve in Donegal, one of eight locations in Europe (only 2 of which are in Ireland) – it is working to stimulate rural economic development by linking investments made by local authorities into walking and recreational infrastructure to the surrounding small towns and villages. By encouraging footfall into these places to explore, experience and enjoy – thereby sustaining local communities.

Local players are key to the success of this project.  By developing a bespoke community trail plan and animating local people to become ‘community trail ambassadors’ or custodians of these natural sites – reigniting ambition for the area and that one person can make a difference and become the difference in that community!

Get Ireland Walking week of celebrations finishes on the 2nd annual National Walking Day, Sunday 26th September, as part of European Week of Sport 2021. Last year it is estimated that 3.1 million people walked on National Walking Day!

So this Sunday, on our National Walking Day, why not Take to Inch – explore for miles!
