28/01/21 - Donegal Sports Star Awards 2020

Donegal Sports Star Awards 2020

The Cathaoirleach and Chief Executive of Donegal County Council have extended their good wishes to the Donegal Sports Star Committee ahead of the first ever Virtual Awards Ceremony which takes place this Friday evening at 7.30pm and which will be streamed live on their Facebook Page http://ow.ly/7nCH50DkMk5

The Cathaoirleach Cllr Rena Donaghey, expressed her delight that the 2020 Donegal Sports Star Awards were able to take place despite the significant challenges that had been posed by Covid-19. “To be able to look forward to something that is so positive is just great for the sporting community across our County.  Great credit must go to the Donegal Sports Star committee for going ahead with the awards show which is being presented virtually for the first time due to the Covid-19 restrictions. I would like to especially applaud the hard work and commitment of all our sports men and women during the past year. They kept going when they could, and showed us all their true strength. I am very proud of the fact that Donegal County Council is again the main sponsor of the awards and it’s fantastic for us to be associated with an event that means so much to the people of our County” Cllr Donaghey said.

The Chief Executive of Donegal County Council, John McLaughlin said that sport gave the public a huge lift and was a very special part of 2020 when times were very difficult due to the pandemic. “First of all I am delighted as the Chief Executive of Donegal County Council to acknowledge the great work of everyone involved in planning and preparing for Friday evening’s awards. The Council has been a sponsor going all the way back to 1977 and it’s great to see the Donegal Sports Star Awards celebrating their 45th anniversary now. When the restrictions were lifted last year live sport gave people a huge lift even though most of the games were played without spectators. The decision made by the committee to go ahead with the awards was news that we widely welcomed. I just want to acknowledge the amazing work that the committee has put in down the years and especially this time when they have had to adapt to organising the Virtual Awards Ceremony for the first time. Finally I want to commend everyone involved in sport in 2020 and hopefully in the not too distant future we will see competitions up and running again in Donegal” Mr McLaughlin said.
