Purpose of Scheme
The purpose of the scheme is to protect the heritage value of historic thatched roof buildings across Ireland, including dwellings and other structures.
Funding Available & Eligibility
For 2025, the Historic Thatched Buildings Grant will offer funding offers of up to €20,000. Any historic thatched structure built before 1970, including domestic or commercial properties, is eligible to apply for grant funding under this scheme.

How to Apply
Applications for grant funding should be made directly by email or post to the Architectural Conservation Office of Donegal County Council. The deadline for submission of completed applications is 4pm on Friday 17th January 2025.
Late applications and/or incomplete applications will not be accepted.

Applications are now being accepted for the Historic Structures Fund 2025

Purpose of Scheme
The purpose of this scheme is to assist the conservation and enhancement of historic structures and buildings for the broader benefit of communities and the public.
Note: There are significant changes to the Historic Structure Fund this year following on from the restructuring of the Built Heritage Investment Scheme earlier this year.
Funding Available & Eligibility
For 2025, The Historic Structures Fund will offer grants from €50,000 up to €200,000 only, and focus on larger enhancement, refurbishment or reuse projects involving heritage structures, where a clear:
(a) community or public benefit has been demonstrated, or
(b) residential benefit has been demonstrated.
Structures eligible to apply for grant funding under this scheme are:
(a) Protected Structures or
(b) Structures eligible for inclusion in the RPS or
(c) Structures within Architectural Conservation Areas
It is essential that the project is overseen by an appropriate qualified conservation professional and there needs to be a comprehensive and sound methodology submitted with the application. Full details on what is required in relation to the methodology are contained within the Circular and Guidance Booklet for Applicants (see below).

Future
Applicants to the Historic Structures Fund (HSF) may be interested in the Conservation Advice Grant Scheme for Vacant Traditional Houses. Applications for this scheme are currently not open, but will re-open in 2025.
Full information on future grant schemes will be advertised through the Council’s social media pages as soon as the schemes are announced by the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage.
