Cathaoirleach Cllr Niamh Kennedy welcomed Teamsters President Sean M. O’Brien home to Donegal during a special reception held on Tuesday, March 11th 2025, at Donegal County Council's Chamber in Lifford. The event brought together elected members, officials, union representatives and community representatives to celebrate Mr. O’Brien’s visit and his deep familial ties to Inishowen.

Cllr. Kennedy acknowledged Mr. O’Brien’s significant contributions to labour rights and his dedication to advocating for workers across the United States. “It is a privilege to host Mr. O’Brien here in Donegal,” said Cllr. Kennedy. “His leadership in the labour movement has positively impacted countless workers, and we are proud of his connection to our county.”

Chief Executive of Donegal County Council, John G. McLoughlin, also addressed the gathering, highlighting the importance of global labour advocacy and the enduring ties between Donegal and the Irish diaspora. “Sean’s visit reinforces the deep historical and cultural bonds between Donegal and Irish-American communities,” said Mr. McLoughlin. “His work in championing workers' rights is inspiring, and we are delighted to welcome him home.”

Mr. O’Brien expressed his gratitude for the warm reception, reflecting on his Donegal heritage and the strong sense of identity he carries with him. “It is an incredible honour to be here in Donegal, a place that holds great significance for me and my family,” said Mr. O’Brien. “The values of hard work, resilience, and solidarity that I have championed throughout my career are deeply rooted in my Irish heritage.”

Strengthening the Donegal-American Diaspora Connection

The visit also underscored the importance of the longstanding ties between Donegal and the Irish-American community. Generations of Donegal emigrants have contributed to industries, businesses, and labour movements across the United States, forming a network that continues to benefit both regions. By fostering these transatlantic relationships, Donegal can enhance economic opportunities, attract investment, and celebrate the shared heritage that unites communities across the ocean.

In discussing economic development, Mr. O’Brien also highlighted the importance of collaboration between Irish and international business communities. “Donegal has a rich history of enterprise and innovation,” he stated. “By strengthening connections between labour organizations, businesses, and government agencies, we can create new opportunities for economic growth that benefit workers and industries on both sides of the Atlantic.”

The reception concluded with a presentation to Mr. O’Brien, recognizing his leadership and ongoing commitment to workers' rights worldwide. Attendees also engaged in discussions on economic development, labour relations, and strengthening transatlantic connections.

Mr. O’Brien was presented with a scroll commemorating the visit and a selection of books on the history of the Inishowen area.
