Refugee Response January Update

Our Matching Relationship Officers have been working diligently since November 2022 on the ‘Offer a Home’ Programme to provide accommodation for those fleeing the war in Ukraine. To date there are over 750 registered occupants in homes across Co. Donegal.

Karyna Prenko was allocated a home in 2024 and this is her story about coming to Donegal and opening her own business:

After moving to Ireland, the Matching Relationship Officers assisted me in finding accommodation in Donegal.  Without this help I would not be able to tell my story of where my new life in Ireland began.

Since settling in, I made every effort to become part of the local community and with the support of the Local Enterprise Office in Donegal (LEO), I was able to set up my business called the ‘The Sewing Room’. They provided me with invaluable assistance in the form of advice and knowledge, which helped bring my idea to life. My business has become not only a personal endeavour but also a valuable place for the community, where anyone can access high-quality repair and custom tailoring services at my Workshop.  Without a roof over my head none of this would have happened and for that I am thankful to Donegal County Council.

My daughter Valeria and I have integrated very well in the community and are actively involved in sports.  In 2024, we participated in the Irish Indoor Rowing Championship where I won a bronze medal in the 1000m race and a gold in the 2000m, while Valeria took gold in the 1000m. This experience was not only a sporting achievement but also a wonderful opportunity to feel the support of the community. I also had the honour of representing Ukraine at the European Running Championship in the summer of 2024, where I won a silver medal in the half marathon.

Valeria and I are active members of several local sports clubs, which supports our athletic goals, friendships and provides inspiration. Together, we train at the Donegal Bay Rowing Club and run with Tir Chonaill Athletic Club.   Additionally, I am a member of the Four Masters Gaelic club, where I engage in traditional Irish sports, and Valeria recently joined the MSC TRI triathlon club in Ballyshannon.

All these achievements and the support we receive from local organisations and the community have been crucial steps in our integration. I am sincerely grateful to everyone who helps and inspires us to continue this journey!

The team at Donegal County Council are encouraged to learn that Karyna and her daughter Valeria have successfully integrated into our community in Donegal Town. Their strength and determination
demonstrate that new beginnings are possible and we wish them all the best in their endeavours.
