Donegal Library Service is thrilled to announce a comprehensive programme of events for children this summer.  From 4th June, the library will offer a diverse range of activities across all its branches, creating a fun and engaging environment.

Through a series of hands-on workshops, live story time sessions, and interactive activities, the library aims to foster a lifelong love for books, learning and libraries to children of all ages.

The programme promises a diverse range of activities that appeal to various interests. From arts and crafts workshops to Harry Potter-inspired events, the Summer Stars Programme ensures there's something for everyone. Children can look forward to Flying Glider workshops, where creativity takes flight, bilingual story time sessions in Irish, English, and Polish, fostering an inclusive environment and creative writing and Lego workshops encouraging creative thinking whilst bringing ideas to life.

Each participant will receive rewards and incentives along the way. To encourage reading goals, each branch will have individual prizes for those who sign up to the programme. Every time you read a book and return it to the library you receive a ticket to be entered into a prize draw. Once your ticket is in the prize draw box, your name could be pulled to win one of our fabulous prizes. The more you read the more chances you have to WIN!  Also, this year, in partnership with Rannóg na Gaeilge of Donegal County Council, children who borrow Irish Language books will be in with the chance of winning special prizes such as Lego from their local library.

In our quest to Plant the Reading Seed , participants in the 2024 summer programme can also look forward to receiving a special sunflower seed and pot allowing children across the county to experience the joy of watching their flowers bloom and grow.

Speaking at the launch of the festival Cathaoirleach Cllr Martin Harley commented “I am delighted to launch this fantastic programme. What sets Donegal County Library's summer initiative apart is its commitment to accessibility and inclusivity. Every event is free, ensuring that every child across the county can participate. I am especially delighted to see two partnerships with Donegal County Council in this year’s programme courtesy of Rannóg na Gaeilge and the Biodiversity Office. The Summer Stars Programme is more than just a series of events; it’s a means for children to connect with their peers and their community.”
