Household food waste bins - Significant progress was made in 2019 in the roll out of the household food waste bins in agglomerations of greater than 500 population. By the end of 2019 approximately 11,000 households in the county had been supplied with a food waste bin.
Environmental Education and Awareness
The Council continued to deliver a comprehensive awareness programme targeting schools, householders, businesses and organisations and community groups.
196 schools were registered with the Green Schools Programme and 43 schools were awarded Green Flags in 2019. Scoil Cholmcille, Letterkenny also celebrated being awarded their 10th Green Flag and over 20 years in the Green Schools Programme.
To support the national MyWaste campaign the awareness officer delivered a recycling publicity campaign highlighting the range of services such as bring banks, recycling centres, kerbside recycling including the Food Waste Bin and home composting.
A number of waste awareness workshops were held with large organisations such as the Letterkenny University Hospital and the Donegal ETB delivering key message on recycling and waste prevention. Donegal Airport was also awarded the ECO Merit certification in 2019.
Dungloe Going Green Sustainable Community initiative was launched in association with Dungloe Tidy Towns, Sustainable Business charters were developed and the Mary From Dungloe International Arts Festival introduced green elements in 2019 with a view to developing these further in future years. National campaigns such as Stop Food Waste, the National Gum Litter Campaign and Reuse Month were also supported. During Reuse Month a number of local events were held including Bike Maintenance, Fashion upcycling and the 2019 Donegal Men’s Shed Showcase was once again a great success.
