During 2019, Donegal County Council continued to progress the design and delivery of social housing throughout the county. Working to achieve the objectives and targets of the Rebuilding Ireland, the Council made significant progress using a number of different approaches to provide high quality and sustainable social housing for individuals and families.
The overall outturn figure for completed units in 2019 was 122 social housing units delivered right across the five Municipal Districts. In addition, the Council successfully brought a further 114 units to construction stage and initiated the acquisition of a further 20 single houses. The Architectural team progressed the design of social housing schemes at Ballybofey, Lifford, Raphoe, Dunfanaghy, Buncrana, Donegal Town, Bundoran, Letterkenny and Carrigart. At
the heart of the design of these homes, are the tenants who will occupy them. All units are designed to be highly energy efficient with low running costs, meeting the specific needs and requirements of tenants where necessary and are delivered to high specifications and standards in line with current building regulations.
Of the 122 units delivered in 2019, 63 units were acquired under the House Acquisition Programme. The House Acquisition Programme enables the provision of social housing in an effective and timely manner to meet the needs of housing applicants and families across the county. The investment in social housing stock under this Programme in 2019 was in the region of €8.5m.
2019 also saw the completion of further social housing units under the current turnkey acquisition process. A total of 42 units were completed in 2019 providing ‘A rated’ homes in the towns of Letterkenny, Falcarragh, Dunfanaghy and Newtowncunningham. This process is ongoing and is evidence of the Council’s commitment to meeting our social housing obligations and targets whilst encouraging economic development at local level. Housing Capital staff work closely with the Department of Housing, Planning and Local Government in progressing turnkey acquisitions.
Under the Council’s Housing Construction Programme, a further 17 social houses were completed in Killybegs and Malin.
