Irish Water continues Donegal countywide water main rehabilitation project to improve security of supply to customers

Irish Water working in partnership with Donegal County Council is investing €12 million in the replacement and rehabilitation of approximately 40km of old water mains across the county. The works commenced in September 2018 and will be complete by the end of 2019. Once the works are complete customers will benefit from a reliable water supply reducing the instances of bursts and a reduction of clean drinking water being lost through leaks. The contract for the works was awarded to ShareRidge Limited.

Progress to date includes the installation of the 2.4km water main, transfer of service connections, road reinstatement and the decommissioning of the old main in Carlin and Kerrykeel.

The installation of water main, transfer of service connections, temporary road reinstatement and decommissioning of the old main is also complete in Doaghmore, Fanad, Meenaleck, Ranafast, and Sheskinbeg. Permanent road reinstatement is due to be completed in late 2019.

Works are ongoing at Derrybeg, Brinnalack, Argery, Ballindrait, Lifford and Ballybofey South Backline.

Works will commence in Bundoran West at the end of April and Corker and Ballyshannon in May.

Remaining schemes currently at design stage are Abbeylands, Ballyshannon, Three Trees, Quigleys Point, Cabry and Redcastle. It is envisaged that these schemes will commence in summer 2019.

Kieran Collins of Irish Water stated: “We are happy with the rate of progress and look forward to the works being completed on all sections towards the end of 2019. This will improve the level of service to consumers and making significant progress on leakage reduction within the county.”

Traffic management will be in operation at all sites during the works and residents and businesses in the affected areas will be notified ahead of the work commencing and provided with contact details should they have any questions.

As the works are spread widely across various parts of the county, the priority and schedule of works has been agreed between the contractor and Irish Water, in consultation with the various Donegal County Council area roads offices to align with road works and other works programmes.

Irish Water and ShareRidge Limited wish to apologise for any inconvenience caused during the construction works on this essential leakage reduction project.
