Irish Water is investing €44 million in the Letterkenny Regional Water Supply Scheme

Carty Contractors and MEIC Ltd signed two contracts with Irish Water for the delivery of the remaining two projects in the essential upgrading of Letterkenny Regional Water Supply Scheme. Irish Water is working in partnership with Donegal County Council to deliver the project over four separate contracts and when completed residents, businesses and visitors to Letterkenny will enjoy a clean, safe and secure drinking water supply.

Two contracts are already underway, involving the construction of a new water treatment plant at Goldrum and for the rehabilitation of water mains as part of the N56 Coolboy to Kilmacrennan road realignment project. Carty Contractors and MEIC Ltd Limited have now signed the two contracts for the delivery of the remaining elements of the project, which will provide a safe and secure water supply to Letterkenny.

Works are due to commence in the coming weeks. Irish Water will invest over €19m between these two contracts, which is part of an overall investment of €44m in the Letterkenny Regional Water Supply Scheme.

Commenting on this essential project for Letterkenny and surrounding areas, David McLoone, Irish Water said: “The Letterkenny Regional Water Supply Scheme (RWSS) is on the Environmental Protection Agency’s Remedial Action List for inadequate treatment.  The overall Letterkenny RWSS project is in place to address these issues, and is being delivered across four construction contracts, two of which are underway, with the remaining two due to commence in the coming weeks.”

The contract signed by Carty Contractors Ltd provides for the replacement of sections of the trunk and distribution mains along the N56 which serves Letterkenny from the water treatment plant at Goldrum. This replacement work is for both network rehabilitation and security of supply given the criticality of the trunk main.  In total over 6.3km of new pipework will be laid for this contract.

The contract signed by MEIC Ltd, will provide additional supply into the Letterkenny network. The project will see 19km of new interconnecting watermains between the Letterkenny, Pollan, Cranford, Milford and Rathmullan Water Supply Schemes, to provide security of supply and address the limited availability of water from existing sources in the broader Letterkenny area. The major element of the contract includes 11.9km of trunk mains from Manorcunningham to Letterkenny as well as three booster pumping stations.

Works are due to commence in the coming weeks and are expected to be completed by 2021.
