Irish Water confirms that design work is underwway on providing wastewater infrastructure in Moville, County Donegal to stop the unacceptable practice of discharging untreated wastewater into Lough Foyle and the Bredagh River. At present Moville has no municipal wastewater treatment facilities. The Environmental Protection Agency has classified the Bredagh River as being ‘Seriously Polluted’.
The advancement of the scheme is at an early stage and Irish Water is carrying out a technical review of the project with engineers appointed to undertake detailed design, planning and procurement services. Third party surveys and landowner engagement has also commenced which will help determine the best solution for this scheme.
The discharge of untreated wastewater is polluting the River Bredagh and detracts from the amenity value of the river and the coastal waters around Moville. The new sewerage scheme will bring benefits to the area in terms of health, integrity of the environment and improved water quality for all. Cleaner water will enhance Moville’s amenity value and act as a platform for social, economic and population development. The project will also ensure that the water quality standards set down by regulatory bodies will be achieved.
It is expected that the planning application will be submitted to the Local Authority in 2019. Subject to statutory approval, it is envisaged that the project will be completed by 2022.
Irish Water will engage with the local community over the course of the project’s development through our Local Liaison Officer, local media and Elected Representatives. Once we have data from our surveys we will hold a public information event in the area where people can drop in to meet the project team and find out more about the project.
Irish Water is Ireland’s national water utility responsible for providing water and wastewater services throughout the country. Water is one of the most essential resources on earth. Providing clean drinking water and disposing of wastewater in a way that protects the environment is vital to our daily lives, human health and for economic and social development. However, our water and wastewater network is under severe stress and is not meeting modern standards. Many of our water and wastewater assets are very old, with some dating back to the 19th century.
Capital investment in the region of €700 million per year is needed for a sustained period of several decades to address the poor condition of Ireland’s water infrastructure. Works have been prioritised to address the most critical issues in line with commitments outlined in Irish Water’s Business Plan up to 2021. Delivery of the business plan will involve a €5.5bn investment in capital spending on drinking water and wastewater quality and capacity and new infrastructure up to 2021 while achieving efficiencies of €1.6bn.
