03/03/2017 - Engineers Week highlighting the role of engineers in our community

Randox Engineers Week 379 x 269

Randox engineers show students around at last year’s Engineering Careers Day event in LYIT

In its 11th year Engineers Ireland’s annual nationwide celebration of engineering will take place between 4 - 10 March 2017.

In Donegal events are taking place throughout the week to show young people the many types of work engineers do. These include fun workshops and events aimed at students in primary and secondary schools as well as third level students and the public in general.

On Monday 6th March Dr. Ken Farquar brings his unique mix of magic, science and engineering to the LYIT.  This show will provide over 450 primary school students with the opportunity to learn about engineering principles in a fun and memorable way.

On Tuesday 7th March Engineers Ireland’s Donegal Region in partnership with LYIT will host an engineering career showcase aimed at Transition Year and Senior Cycle students as well as Third Level students and the general public.  Engineers from up to 20 locally based companies and organisations in a variety of engineering disciplines will host stalls and meet with attendees to speak about their lives in engineering and to offer advice on education and prospective career paths.  Companies such as Randox Teoranta, Terex, Zeus, Donegal County Council, Abbott Ireland and representatives from a number of LYIT Engineering Departments to name but a few will be in attendance on the day.

As well as supporting the career event in the LYIT Randox Teoranta, based in Dungloe will take up to 50 students from a local school on a tour of their cutting edge facility on the 10th March.

Ciaran Richardson, Head of R&D at Randox Teoranta in Dungloe, said; “Our engineers at Randox Teoranta are involved in pioneering new technologies with the ability to save lives, including research for Alzheimer’s disease, and diseases of the kidneys and liver, and it is therefore fitting we are involved in celebrating Engineers Week.  With an investment of £25 million, Randox Teoranta is a world-leading life science, engineering, research and manufacturing facility, which offers the Donegal community the chance to pursue a world class career at home”.

He added “we hope that throughout Engineers Week we can elevate student knowledge, stimulate their interest in pursuing a future in engineering, and encourage them to think about one day hopefully joining our multi-disciplinary team of engineers”.

“The event in LYIT on the 7th March also creates a great opportunity for some of our engineers, including Mechanical Design Engineers, Electrical & Electronic Design Engineers, Embedded Systems Engineers and Software Engineers to chat to students about this exciting industry. They’ll share their own personal experiences and offer career advice, answering any questions students might have about engineering at Randox Teoranta.”

During the course of the week Engineers from various Donegal based organisations including Donegal County Council will also visit numerous local schools to promote science, technology, engineering and maths and to increase a greater awareness of the positive impacts of the work of Engineers on our everyday lives.

Stephen Flynn, Chairperson of Engineers Ireland Donegal Region, said “Now more than ever Donegal and the surrounding region can offer a wide variety of careers in engineering.  Many businesses working in innovative areas such as biomedical engineering, chemical engineering, electrical and electronic engineering and environmental engineering as well as the more traditional areas of mechanical, structural and civil engineering have established themselves locally.  We are very pleased that many of these companies have joined us to support Engineers Week in promoting awareness of engineering and highlighting the opportunities it offers.”
