County Donegal Heritage Plan Funding Announced

The County Donegal Heritage Office, Donegal County Council in partnership with the County Donegal Heritage Forum has secured €27,288 in matching funds from The Heritage Council for the implementation of the County Donegal Heritage Plan in 2017.  The Heritage Plan actions for which funding has been secured are:

 

Traditional Shopfronts Seminar in partnership with Letterkenny ‘Tidy Towns’ Committee (Action 2.4) that will provide advice from a range of specialists on the preservation and conservation traditional shopfronts and vernacular signage.

 

Oral History Training Workshop (Action 4.9) to provide advice and training to community groups and individuals who are recording local history.

 

Study of Lime Kilns in County Donegal (Action 5.5) to investigate their distribution; identify their forms, components and construction; develop a typology; document specific case studies; and suggest possible conservation measures.

 

‘Conservation without Frontiers’ Cross-Border Built Heritage Summer School in association with Ulster Architectural Heritage Society, Irish Georgian Society & Derry City & Strabane District Council from Wednesday, June 7 to Saturday, June 10, 2017 (Actions 4.5 & 2.1) to explore, discuss and debate issues relating to our shared architectural and cultural heritage.

 

A free booklet on the 1930s Schools’ Folklore Collection in County Donegal to be published as part of ‘Donegal Heritage Series’ (Actions 4.1 & 3.7).

A lime kiln in Tully near Dungloe, one of circa 5,000 lime kilns in County Donegal identified on the Ordnance Survey maps in the early twentieth century.

 

Traditional ShopFront WH Raitt

The Traditional Shopfronts Seminar in the autumn will highlight shopfronts, such as ‘W.H. Raitt & Son’ business premises in Stranorlar, that exhibit the original proportioning and materials of the traditional shopfront as well as the full-façade hand-painted signage.
