Irish Water is delighted to announce that works to upgrade the Ardsbeg Water Treatment Plant have been completed following a €4.1 million investment. These works are ensuring an improved and more reliable quality of water for 5,000 customers in the Gortahork and Falcarragh areas as well as a better security of supply. The scheme has now been removed from the Environmental Protection Agency’s Remedial Action List, which it was included on for elevated levels of aluminium and THMs.
Speaking about the project David McLoone from Irish Water said: “We are delighted to have completed these works and look forward to celebrating with the local community at the official opening of the plant in the coming months.
“This project involved the decommissioning of the existing Ardsbeg Water Treatment Plant following the construction of a new water treatment plant adjacent to the existing site and will ensure a safer, more secure and improved drinking water supply for our customers in that area.”
The new treatment plant comprises a robust flocculation, coagulation, filtration process and UV disinfection system; necessary upgrades to ensure a fit for purpose water supply for the area.
The new plant has a design output of 1,800m3/day serving a population of 5,000 local consumers. This project also included the construction of a new treated water storage reservoir which has provided much improved security of supply for the local residents.
EPS completed the contract on behalf of Irish Water and the project was delivered in partnership with Donegal County Council.
This project forms part of Irish Water’s investment plan. Works have been prioritised to address the most critical issues in line with commitments outlined in Irish Water’s Business Plan. Delivery of the business plan will involve a €5.5 billion investment in capital spending on drinking water and wastewater quality and capacity and new infrastructure up to 2021.
